Jovina Johnson
Jovina Johnson is a resident of Jersey City for over 20 years. After moving to the Journal Square area in 2007, she saw the gentrification and opportunities for improvement in the area. She became involved in the community by joining the JSQCA (Journal Square Community Association) as a member in 2019 and joined the board in 2020. She became President in 2021 and was the first black female in this role. One of her priorities was increasing the membership’s diversity to more accurately reflect the population in Journal Square and the city overall.
During her tenure, guests have included the Office of Diversity and Inclusion, JC Free Library Director Terry Hill, and Council President Joyce Watterman. Most recently,
Jovina has partnered with two other female leaders in the community to create a Hudson County League of Women Voters Chapter. This non-partisan organization’s mission is to work towards building a future where every voice is heard, and every citizen has the opportunity to shape the collective destiny of Hudson County.
Finally, as an HR professional for a sports organization, Jovina volunteers as a member of NYC Metro Chapter WISE (Women in Sports and Events) Within mentoring committee which supports mentoring pairs and provides opportunities for the participants to connect locally at chapter events.
